TREASURY I

wearable statement

‘Treasury I’ by JA.LIZAH comprises golden wearable artefacts, each a display piece and a wearable statement, bridging the gap between design, fashion, and art.

the artefacts

This series of handcrafted artefacts includes the Power Bowl Bag, a neckpiece, an arm and ear cuff, a brooch, and three rings. Each piece represents different parts of the designer’s body, with the Power Bowl Bag’s dynamically arranged wires symbolizing her heart.

storylines unfolding

Building on this visual language, the distinct lines in the wirework throughout the collection represent continuously unfolding storylines, reflecting the metaphysical cages the designer is breaking free from. These cages are visually transformed into artefacts of personal power, collectively building protective personal armour and strength.

the eye

The Power Bowl Bag, neckpiece, and brooch offer contemporary interpretations of the Eye of Ra, a significant symbol in Egyptian mythology. The wirework symbolises the sun, snakes, and other iconic imagery from ancient Greece. Each piece, drawing on subconscious associations, possesses an enigmatic allure.

personal journey

Drawing inspiration from Egypt, Greece and South Africa, the artefacts reflect Ja.lizah’s personal journey, culminating in these countries' influences seen throughout the collection.

handcraft

Employing ancient jewellery-making techniques such as wire wrapping, hammering, soldering, and casting, JA.LIZAH’s creations are a blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. Each piece is meticulously shaped and finished, with laser-cut base plates and engraved logos, merging heritage with modern precision.

dream factory

The collection, conceived in Cape Town within the walls of a historical bank building that once stored Africa’s gold, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage that informs her creations. After refining her prototypes with the help of Zimbabwean jeweller Tendai Mahlengwe in his garage-turned-dream-factory, JA.LIZAH continued her journey to Cairo and Athens, where her work received accolades, including an award at the 2024 Cairo Design Awards.
